The importance of second opinion

about the importance of a second opinion

A recent study conducted at the University of Michigan ( 4 December 2006 ) reveals that in 50% of cases studied, a second opinion resulted in a significant change in treatment recommendations. Focusing on breast cancer, the research found second opinions offered variations in biopsy interpretations, while alternative readings of mammographies occurred in 45% of cases. Radiologists specializing in breast imaging often identified cancers that were previously missed. Additional biopsies were recommended to 25% of patients, while 50% of patients experienced a change in surgery recommendations. Indications were that initial surgery recommendations did not take into account new technologies that could lead to better outcomes. In conclusion, researchers stated: "Multidisciplinary review can provide patients with useful additional information when making difficult treatment decisions."
